about

TREPREC072

FRANCIS ROOT is J. W. Leyland
SCONSACRATA is C. M. Davis.

At times grandiose and at times abject, this split is the first foray into experimental black metal from Oslo-based FRANCIS ROOT and London-based SCONSACRATA. The pair are both members of the sludge band Beggar, but their abiding passion for black metal has led them each to develop, in isolation, the boundary-pushing sounds on display here.

FRANCIS ROOT’s half of this split is a hugely expansive and expressive suite of four tracks that range from tremolo-picked rushes of melody to churning, angular grooves, peppered with elements of electronica. The approach throughout is progressive and from the outset, with opener ‘A Pale Shimmer’, we are submerged in a highly evocative underworld of sound.

SCONSACRATA meanwhile delivers a wretched dose of unorthodox blackened abjection that is indebted to the lo-fi punk- and thrash-influenced side of the genre while fully immersed in darkly psychedelic synth work. Straying into industrial and techno territory, the electronic elements are anchored among frantic blasts and caustic vocals culminating in the breathless apex of ‘Narcosatanic Insurgent’.

Across both halves of this release the listener undergoes a transcendent journey through the mire of these two artists’ psyches. It is the sound of a creative exploration of the influences that have made indelible marks on their worldview and of each artist taking new steps towards self-expression and actualisation.
