Nehushtan is a blackened sludge project based on a concept Espi had for a novel that they ended up deciding to use for this band, instead. Book 1: Medusa’s Revenge takes place in the Land of Nod, a fictionalized, post-apocalyptic version of America set in 2108 that resembles works such as Mad Max, Fallout, and The Dark Tower. The main groups of the Land of Nod are the Serpent Eagles and the serpent healers, and this album follows the story of Medusa, a nonbinary serpent healer who is seeking vengeance on the Serpent Eagles for killing their lover. They join forces with Calchas, an orphaned scavenger who is trying to find his place in the lonely world he was born into. The band’s name, Nehushtan, is taken from the bronze serpent of Moses, which can be seen on modern day medical symbols. It references the serpent healers’ style of healing involving two snakes - one for physical health and one for mental health - which Medusa uses in the story to heal Calchas.

For the lyrics, the main influences were the works mentioned above such as The Dark Tower and Fallout, as well as lyrics from bands such as Mastodon, Hoth, and Bask. The music is influenced equally by sludge bands such as Mastodon and Baroness and classic black metal bands such as Darkthrone and Enslaved. This is a musical departure for Espi Kvlt as it is the first album in which they have sang clean vocals and played the harp. Additionally this was Chris H’s first endeavor into writing a full album on his own. They are both extremely proud of the result

Even for this genre the sheer intensity of this album always manages to floor me. Might not be the most unique album under the sun but it doesn't have to be; the performances are tight and ferocious, the songwriting is dynamic and explosive, the production is crushing, it's just all things to a mathcore fan. napalmsatan
